How to use meridiaMeridia (Reductil in Europe) is used as an appetite suppressant. It is used in conjunction with an overall diet plan to reduce weight and keep the lost weight from returning. Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Meridia (Sibutramine) comes as a capsule. Take by mouth exactly as directed by your doctor, usually once daily. To help you remember to take sibutramine, take it around the same time every day. You can take Meridia on an empty stomach approximately one hour before breakfast each morning or after a meal. Because Meridia may cause sleeplessness, avoid taking a dose late in the day. However, if your doctor tells you to take it in a certain way, take it as directed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Meridia as prescribed. The full effect on weight may require four to six weeks. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Meridia and increase your dose, after you have been taking Generic Meridia for at least 4 weeks. Your doctor may decrease your dose if you experience certain side effects while you are taking your starting dose. You will probably lose weight soon after you begin taking sibutramine and following your diet and exercise program. Be sure to monitor your weight, and call your doctor if you do not lose at least 4 pounds during your first 4 weeks of therapy. Your doctor may wish to change your dose of Meridia. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming. Also, if used for a longer period of time, do not suddenly stop using this drug without your doctor's commendation. If you stop taking Meridia, you may gain weight. Your dose may need to be gradually reduced, especially if you have been taking this medication for a long time. Over time, this drug may not work as well as it did at the beginning. Consult your doctor if weight increases. Do not share Meridia with others. This medication should be used in addition to a reduced calorie diet. If Meridia makes you dizzy or lightheaded, avoid driving or engaging in activities requiring alertness. Alcohol can increase unwanted side effects of dizziness. Since this medication can increase your blood pressure and heart rate (pulse), it is important to have regular check-ups to monitor these readings before starting and during treatment with sibutramine. Your doctor will also monitor your progress and response to treatment (usually 4 weeks after starting treatment and then as directed).
