Prescription
Why is Meridia prescribed?
Meridia (Sibutramine) is used in combination with a reduced calorie diet and exercise to help people who are overweight, lose weight and maintain their weight loss. Sibutramine is in a class of medications called appetite suppressants. It works by acting on appetite control centers in the brain to decrease appetite.
Normally, a prescription for Meridia (Reductil) is for it to be taken by mouth once daily. You may not see result for 4 and up to 6 weeks after you begin taking it. Meridia can be taken either on a full stomach or an empty stomach. If you notice that you are obtaining weight while taking this medication, talk to your doctor immediately. There is a possibility that your prescription could lose its effectiveness over time. You should never take it upon yourself to increase your prescribed dose, how often you take it, or take it any longer than your doctor directs you to because this drug is habit-forming.
The manufacturers state that Generic Meridia should only be prescribed to:
- otherwise healthy obese individuals [body mass index (BMI) > or = 30 kg/m2]
- the morbidly overweight (BMI > or = 27 kg/m2 with health risks, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol)
(BMI is calculated as weight measured in kilograms over height in meters squared.)
